Sopros – Breath
  Author: Monica Mansur

Date: 2008

Description: In this video Mansur enters the body using video endoscopy, a medical imaging technique. The reiterated image of the opening and closing of the larynx, together with the soundtrack of a difficult guttural breathing and soft coughs, seems to materialize that basic living function that is breathing. The video, quite disturbing in its medical and visceral appearing, belongs to the recent wave of Body Art based on endoscopic technology. Inaugurated by Stelarc and Mona Hatoum in the 1990s, this form of Body Art stages some fundamental issues of the peculiar visual regime of the inner body made possible by video endoscopy. Here all boundaries and dualities are blurred: inside/ outside, private/public, subjective/objective, self/other.
